The Role Of Bioinformatics In Sex-Related Education And Medical Practices

Various bioinformaticians, postdoc, and PhD jobs are available in a joint project that is involving the sex chromosomes evolution in both plants and animals. In the project, we are currently analyzing the evolution genomics in animal and plant systems that have extensively recombined sex chromosomes.

These sex chromosomes are known to highly dynamic sections of the genome as compared to model systems which include mammals and flies. Our project is aimed at seeking explanations behind concerns such as the evolution of recombined sex chromosomes, what causes the fast turnover in genetic sex-determining systems, and the primary roles of sex-antagonistic selection in the development of the genome.

Undergraduate biology students sometimes find it difficult to construct a robust comprehension of sex chromosomes, homologous chromosomes, and perhaps the particulate nature of genes. Therefore, during this lesson students will enhance their understanding of human sex chromosomes by examining sex chromosomes, autosomes and the non-homologous aspects of the human Y and X sex chromosomes.

This four-guided activity will enable the students to understand the structure and function of the human sex chromosomes and autosomal, view and get the interpretation of gene maps, and familiarize themselves with the core bioinformatics resources and data.

Also, the lesson will allow students interaction to facilitate the exchange and evaluation of each other's ideas before and after the investigations. Moreover, the lesson emphasizes the interdependence and collaborative nature of science by making use of an open resource that has been compiled, reviewed, and commented by qualified scientists from all over the world who are investigating numerous and different concerns and making use of the sexual information and resources in a variety of ways.

The major theme of this lesson is determining sex and defining sex or gender (in extension 2 which is optional). It will also present the students an opportunity to explore variations that exist in how the non-biologists and biologists perceive and define sex - either male or female and how the conjugation between sexes occur.
